It appears that variations of this problem have shown up on Apple discussion boards for a while, so if it’s a bug then it may been longstanding and yet to be addressed. It’s not always related, but try and always keep some storage space available on your device so that it performs well. Or perhaps your contacts are seemingly lost, showing phone numbers instead of names as they should. It’s well known the iPhone starts dramatically underperforming and misbehaving when the devices storage is full, sometimes deleting photos, mail, apps (though this is a feature called Offload Apps which is separate from the issue mentioned here), and other data from the device. In my experience, the phone ends up like this in the morning after the iPhone has been plugged in and unused over night, though it’s unclear what if anything that may have to do with why it happens. However, because clearing up storage space and a reboot seems to fix the problem, it could simply be a quirk of what happens when iPhone has run out of space and can’t figure itself out.
